Amazon today introduced a new lineup of Fire tablets, including a $50 slate with a 7-inch display, updated user interface, and Prime perks.
With a quad-core processor, front- and rear-facing cameras, up to 128GB of expandable storage, and more, the new device costs half the price of Amazon’s current 6-inch Fire HD tablet.
“Today, we’re taking another step in our mission to deliver premium products at non-premium prices,” Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos said in a statement.
For $49.99, consumers get an ISP display, 1.3GHz processor, and up to seven hours of battery life, as well as the Fire OS 5 Bellini platform, Amazon Underground’s app store, and Activity Center for tech-savvy kids.
Half price doesn’t mean half the features, though: The new Fire comes with exclusives like ASAP, X-Ray, Second Screen, Amazon FreeTime, Family Library, Word Runner, Mayday Screen Sharing, and On Deck offline viewing for Prime members.
Head to Amazon’s website toconfigure and pre-order your own 7-inch, Wi-Fi-compatible device. Protective covers are also available for $24.99 in black, blue, orange, green, or purple.
The new Fire is set to start shipping on Sept. 30. For educational purposes (or if you’ve got a lot of stocking to stuff this year), the tablet can also be purchased as a buy-five-get-one-free six-pack for $249.95.
Today’s announcement comes a week after reports tipped a $50 slate, for simple tasks like streaming video and shopping on Amazon.com.
Fire HD Lineup
If you’re looking for something a bit more substantial, Amazon also has new Fire HD offerings.
Available in 8-inch and 10.1-inch models, the tablets boast many of the same features as their much cheaper sibling, with the added perk of more high-def viewing area while on the go.
Starting Sept. 30, customers can pick up the smaller variant in black, magenta, blue, or tangerine for $149.99; the HD 10, meanwhile, comes in black or white, with a $229.99 price tag.
“Fire HD combines an incredibly thin and light design with powerful performance to deliver the best entertainment experience available on a tablet,” Bezos said.
In this digital age, though, it’s not just adults toting tablets. So Amazon added the new Fire Kids Edition (left), which comes with a year of Amazon FreeTime Unlimited, a child-proof case, and a two-year “worry-free” guarantee.
The follow-up to last year’s $149 Fire HD Kids Edition, the new model—with more than 20,000 age-appropriate websites and YouTube videos—is available now to pre-order for $99.99.
It sports a quad-core processor, front- and rear-facing cameras, up to 128GB of expandable storage, and access to Amazon’s content library.
“Last year, we introduced the first tablet built from the ground up for kids and their parents—and customers loved it,” Peter Larsen, vice president of Amazon Devices, said in a statement. “With the new Fire Kids Edition we’ve added more great content and features for parents and kids while lowering the price.”
Features like FreeTime Unlimited, an all-in-one subscription service with access to more than 10,000 books, videos, educational apps, and games from Disney, Lego, Nickelodeon, and, of course, Amazon Studios.
The Fire Kids Edition will go on sale later this month, alongside the rest of the new lineup.
